Clayton Community Profile  The site of Clayton has been a crossroads ever since time began. Clayton is located at the intersection of US Highways 56, 412, 64, and 87 in Union County which is located in the northeastern corner of New Mexico, bordering Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Over 500 dinosaur tracks can be seen at Clayton Lake State Park. Other area attractions include Capulin Volcano National Monument which offers 5 trails. Two of the more popular trails include: the Crater Rim Trail, a paved one-mile trail that goes around the rim of the volcano; and the Crater Vent Trail which descends 105 ft. to the bottom of the crater. You can also visit the Herzstein Memorial Museum, Black Jack Ketchum’s gravesite, and the historic old Eklund Hotel. In addition to excellent fishing and camping, Clayton offers a 9-hole golf course, a public swimming pool, library, and movies at the historic Luna Theatre.
