Cowboys & Indians June 2010 article about Taos
May 12, 2010

Cowboy & Indians June 2010 in-depth article on Taos talks about what is sacred and spiritual about Taos.

Below is an excerpt from the article:
"Taos has celebrity magic to be sure. Julia Roberts, Val Kilmer, Shirley MacLaine, Donald Rumsfeld, and plenty more paparazzi-fodder have put real estate under their love for the town.

"But the true stars in Taos are nature, culture, art, and history. This is a place that really has a shot at being a model of ecotourism, a kind of travel that actively contributes to an area’s conservation of its natural and cultural heritage. And in the Taos area, there’s loads of natural and cultural heritage to conserve—and enjoy. Pueblo (and other) Indian, Spanish colonial, Hispanic, Anglo East Coast artists and intellectuals—these are just some of the groups who have become Taoseños over the generations and who have contributed to everything from trade to architecture, making the inspiring mélange that is pure Taos.

"As for what Mother Nature brought to the party, you have only to look to the quality of light, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Rio Grande, and that amazing gorge to see an awesome environment that welcomes nature lovers, artists, and sportsmen as much as it does deer, elk, and cutthroat trout. The landscape and the diverse peoples and creatures who share it create a spiritual quality that no one can quite put their finger on. But on a starry night in Taos, you sure can feel it.

"Whenever I’m in Taos, I find myself trying to put my finger on that sacred something. And I’m not throwing that word around lightly. Neither were the Taos tourism folks when they came up with a campaign called Return to Sacred Places to get the word out about all that the Taos region offers. Earth, sky, mountains, water...and something else you’re at a loss to define."
